The first session covered THE GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF LECTURERS. Mr Tredoux emphasized that Mukhanyo is “an academic institution with a missional heart,” and that the lecturers play an important role to achieve the goals of the vision and mission of Mukhanyo. Several strategies were highlighted to improve student performance, which included some of the following: set objectives, students should take ownership, teach students how to learn, care for your students, be prepared to walk an extra mile, class discipline and class rules and the example of the lecturer. During the second session, Mr Tredoux concentrated on the ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES OF THE LECTURERS. He continued during the third session with the LESSON STRUCTURE and underlined the importance and role of PREPARATION by both lecturers and students. He also explained the different parts of a lesson plan and factors to keep in mind when developing this plan. During the section “introduction to new material” Mr Tredoux concentrated on two aspects: Firstly, common practices of truly great teachers/lecturers. He discussed that great lecturers possess the following characteristics: have credibility, communicate clearly, stimulate interest, teach with style, take the risk of creativity and value and respect students. Secondly, an effective way to involve all the students in the class during a lesson is by using group work. The lecturers discussed the advantages of this method in small groups. At the closing of the training session, lecturers were left with the following quote as food for thought: “Both he who expects great things of others, and he who expects little, will receive what he expects” Other Articles in the February 2017 Newsletter
To be able to serve this need, work to capture lectures for the BTh degree has now started at Mukhanyo’s new studio.
For the past few years, Mukhanyo’s approximately 50 distance study groups are already supplied not only with study guides and other material, but also with DVD's with visual lectures for all their modules. The studio capturing team consisting of Peter Masanabo (supervisor), Spiwe Legodi and Simon Mashiloane, have in the past few years captured and edited hundreds of lectures at a pace of about six lectures per week and last year completed some 50 modules. The result was close on 450 master DVD’s which were produced and copies send to all the study groups.
The staff at Mukhanyo can now look forward to the CHE’s reply. It is uncertain when this can be expected. If still this year, students can start to enroll as from the beginning of 2018. Other Articles in the February 2017 Newsletter |
