Faculty Forum - Investing in our lecturers

9/2/2017

Mukhanyo hosted a faculty forum for its lecturers on 23 January 2017 at the Pretoria Learning Centre. It was presented by the head of educational delivery, Mr Jackie Tredoux. This practical day with breakout groups and workshops inspired enthusiastic participation among lecturers.
The first session covered THE GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF LECTURERS. Mr Tredoux emphasized that Mukhanyo is “an academic institution with a missional heart,” and that the lecturers play an important role to achieve the goals of the vision and mission of Mukhanyo.

Several strategies were highlighted to improve student performance, which included some of the following: set objectives, students should take ownership, teach students how to learn, care for your students, be prepared to walk an extra mile, class discipline and class rules and the example of the lecturer.

During the second session, Mr Tredoux concentrated on the ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES OF THE LECTURERS.

He continued during the third session with the LESSON STRUCTURE and underlined the importance and role of PREPARATION by both lecturers and students. He also explained the different parts of a lesson plan and factors to keep in mind when developing this plan.

During the section “introduction to new material” Mr Tredoux concentrated on two aspects:
Firstly, common practices of truly great teachers/lecturers. He discussed that great lecturers possess the following characteristics: have credibility, communicate clearly, stimulate interest, teach with style, take the risk of creativity and value and respect students.

Secondly, an effective way to involve all the students in the class during a lesson is by using group work. The lecturers discussed the advantages of this method in small groups.

At the closing of the training session, lecturers were left with the following quote as food for thought:
“Both he who expects great things of others, and he who expects little, will receive what he expects”

Extending services to distance students

2/2/2017

There is a need for a distance BTh programme for students all over southern Africa and Mukhanyo hopes to be able to serve these students as from 2018. Distance students who have completed their studies in the Diploma in Theology have expressed the wish to continue their studies at the degree level, but cannot afford to come to one of Mukhanyo’s campuses.
To be able to serve this need, work to capture lectures for the BTh degree has now started at Mukhanyo’s new studio.

For the past few years, Mukhanyo’s approximately 50 distance study groups are already supplied not only with study guides and other material, but also with DVD's with visual lectures for all their modules.

The studio capturing team consisting of Peter Masanabo (supervisor), Spiwe Legodi and Simon Mashiloane, have in the past few years captured and edited hundreds of lectures at a pace of about six lectures per week and last year completed some 50 modules. The result was close on 450 master DVD’s which were produced and copies send to all the study groups.

Welcome to our guests

Rev David Kawanga from the Zomba Theological College in Malawi and Dr Piet Houtman from the Free Reformed Church in the Netherlands have arrived at Mukhanyo as guest lecturers for four weeks. Its not their first visit, but they are once again very welcome!

Renewed and additional programmes completed

2/2/2017

Every so often the Council for Higher Education (CHE) expects all tertiary institutions to evaluate or renew their qualifications so that the accreditation of their programmes can be continued. Therefore, Mukhanyo’s academic staff had to work hard in the past few years to make sure that all their programmes are aligned with SAQA  and the CHE’s requirements.

This also applies to a submission for accreditation of the new BTh (Honours) as well as two higher certificate qualifications. These programmes were separately submitted for accreditation between 2014 and the beginning of this year.

The staff at Mukhanyo can now look forward to the CHE’s reply. It is uncertain when this can be expected. If still this year, students can start to enroll as from the beginning of 2018.
