In July 1993, Rev Flip Buys of the Reformed Churches in South Africa accepted a call to become a missionary in KwaNdebele, focussing on the development of the Mukhanyo Bible School. After a year of preparations, he started in 1994 with five students at what is now Mukhanyo Theological College. He was principal, lecturer, missionary, church planter, and fund-raiser, all in one. Today, retired but still active, he will tell you how God has provided much more than originally imagined. Through the years, God blessed Mukhanyo with growth in many aspects.

The first years were not easy. All the funds came from donations of churches, mission organisations and individuals in South Arica, the Netherlands, South Korea and North America. Finding a suitable site for the campus took many hours. The curriculum and study programmes also had to be developed.

This and much more was done. God give Flip Buys the talents, drive as well as a world-wide network to make it all possible. Over a period of 15 years, he was able to lay the initial foundations, recruit co-workers and much more to establish a theological college that now has branches and distance learning groups all over South Africa and also in a number of other African countries.

Today Dr Buys looks back and thanks God that Mukhanyo is what it is today, with over a thousand students, some 35 lecturers, a number of accredited degrees and other academic programmes and courses. And he is certain that God will continue to provide for and bless Mukhanyo: “Never think small of God. He is the Almighty and He makes possible what we as His children don’t think possible. We praise his Name!”
